Sphynx is a long-time fixture of the Austin music scene; they were even honored in 2014 with a City Hall proclamation declaring February 13 ‘Sphynx Day’ in Austin. Now, after 7 years of relentless touring, Austin’s homegrown secret is out.
The band had a breakout year in 2017, releasing 2 EPs, ‘Floppy Disco’ and ‘Space Camp,’ and playing packed venues and festivals across the US opening for top acts like Questlove and Walk The Moon. That momentum continued into 2018 with the February release of ‘Patterns,’ a synthwave groove illustrating the band’s penchant for timeless hooks with a modern edge. The single was streamed over 43,000 times in its first week and received independent radio play across the US, UK, and Mexico. ‘Patterns’ also caught the attention of NPR Music’s All Songs Considered, who said “Sphynx is like Tame Impala if Kevin Parker grew up on a healthy diet of disco” and called ‘Patterns’ “an effortless, high octane jam.”
Sphynx made their maiden voyage to the UK in early March where they logged 6 headline performances for enthusiastic crowds; receiving praise from the prominent UK magazine, The Music Site and connecting with London songwriters and radio DJs. The band flew back to Austin in time for 6 more shows at SXSW 2018, receiving a warm welcome at their annual ‘Sphynx & Friends Day Party’ and headlining for a capacity crowd at the popular MidCoast Takeover showcase.
With a string of videos and singles set for release and 2018 appearances at festivals in the US and Europe, Sphynx’s buzz is just beginning. Years spent sleeping in vans and performing in dive bars have shaped a band with a fresh take on pop music and a stadium-worthy live show.
